The 6-Step Metal Clay Process: From Soft Clay to Solid Metal Jewelry
Metal clay is one of the most unique materials in jewelry making. It allows designs to be formed by hand and then transformed through fire into solid metal. What begins as clay becomes lasting metal through a careful, intentional process.
What I often tell my students is that metal clay follows a six-step journey from concept to finished jewelry.
1. Design
Every piece begins with intention.
This is the stage of inspiration, sketching, and planning. It may start with an idea, a texture, a symbol, or written reflection.
This is where the form and process are mapped out before working with the clay.
2. Sculpt
Once the design is decided, the clay is shaped by hand.
Using tools, textures, molds, and sometimes gemstones, the piece is formed. This is the stage where the design becomes physical.
3. Dry
Before firing, the piece must be fully dry.
I use a dehydrator to ensure even drying and to help the clay hold its structure before kiln firing.
4. Refine
Before firing, the piece is refined using sanding blocks, files, and finishing tools.
This step smooths the surface and brings out the detail of the design.
5. Kiln Fire
During firing, the water evaporates, the binder burns away, and the metal particles fuse together.
The piece transforms from clay into solid metal like, sterling silver or golden bronze.
6. Finish
The final step is finishing the piece using traditional jewelry techniques.
This may include tumbling, polishing, or plating depending on the design. The piece is completed and ready to wear.
What begins as clay is now solid metal jewelry.
More Than a Process
Metal clay is a structured process that turns a soft material into lasting metal.
Each step is intentional. Nothing is mass-produced. Every piece is made by hand.
